ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the required works (stormwater management works and final terrain configuration works) for the restoration of the existing uncontrollable refuse disposal sites (URDS) of Municipality of Lefkona, namely:

• URDS of western stream of Municipal District of Lefkona, located 0.5km west of community of Lefkona within an area of 0.6 hectares
• URDS of eastern stream of Dunicipal District of Lefkona, located 1km east of community of Kato Christos within an area of 0.4 hectares
• URDS of Skopeftirio (Geren) of Dunicipal District of Kato Dentra, located 1km east of community of Kato Dentra with an area of 2 hectares
• URDS of Agios Georgios of Dunicipal District of Lefkona, located 1km northeast of community of Lefkona within an area of 0.5 hectares

SOLUTION
The long-term operation of the URDS with minimum protection measures for the natural environment, requires an integrated and direct response to the current condition.

The total volume of refuse deposits was:

• 9.000m3 in the URDS of Agios Georgios
• 2.500m3 in the URDS of western stream
• 2.000m3 in the URDS of eastern stream
• 11.500m3 in the URDS of Skopeftirio
  

For the restoration of the URDS of eastern and western stream, and Skopeftirio, the project included:

• formation of the existing URDS grade using earthwork machinery
• formation of the final URDS, namely a surface soil layer with a thickness of 1m
• landscape restoration in accordance with international standards
  
• surveillance of the area and monitoring – control of water quality in the nearest wells around the URDS

The restoration works of the URDS of Agios Georgios included:

• perimetrical drainage ditch for flood protection
• formation of final grade of URDS (smoothing layer, clay layer of low permeability, drainage and planting layers)
• landscape restoration in accordance with international standards
• fencing
  
• surveillance of the area and monitoring – control of water quality in the nearest wells around the URDS

BENEFIT
The design of the project solved the problem of pollution of natural environment from the long-term operation of the URDS of Municipality of Lefkona.
