ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the required works in order to solve the problems caused by the open ditches (torrents) of Municipal Districts of Provata, Anagenisi and Vamvakia of Municipality of Kapetan Mitrousis.

SOLUTION
The project was required due to the proximity of the ditch to human activities, pollution and aesthetic degradation caused by the termination of the sewers and the disposal of wastewater within the ditch.

The main problems were:

risk of accidents especially in children (deaths by drowning happened in the past)
heavy water pollution and stinky odors threatening the health of residents
contamination sources along the ditch
aesthetic degradation
increase of the mosquito population

Furthermore, at the perimeter and within the torrent were dumped debris, household solid waste and residues from agricultural activities (pesticides bottles, fertilizer bags, etc). These actions clearly contributed to further deterioration of the water used for irrigation and the environment of the region threatening public health.

The torrents of Provatas, Vamvakia and Anagennisi drain the water runoff from the rice fields of the region during the summer months. Additionally, the stormwater runoff of the region is drained within the torrents. After negotiations with the Department of Agriculture in Serres and local irrigation water distributors (TOEB), the flow was set at: Β. Μαλιώκας & Συνεργάτες - Προστασία περιβάλλοντος

Provatas torrent: 5,20m3/sec
Vamvakia torrent: 4,00m3/sec
Anagenisi torrent: 2,50m3/sec

The cross section of the ditch encasement was rectangular. The dimensions and lengths of the torrents were:

Provatas torrent: 2,00 x 3,00 with a length of 385m
Vamvakia torrent: 2,60 x 1,40 with a length of 980m
Anagenisi torrent: 1,90 x 1,30 with a length of 545m

The pipeline within the encasement was constructed of reinforced concrete C16/20 with a thickness of 30cm. The installation took place on a concrete base with thickness of 10cm on top of a layer of gravel. Moreover, manholes were constructed for cleaning of the pipeline.

BENEFIT
The design of the ditch encasement works solved the problems caused by the open ditches (torrents) of Municipal Districts of Provata, Anagenisi and Vamvakia of Municipality of Kapetan Mitrousis.
