Client: IMH Ltd Creative
Year: 1999

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment study for the approval of the environmental terms for the installation and operation of a recycling unit of used tyres in the industrial area of Kilkis.

SOLUTIONΠ.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

The unit will be constructed in the industrial area of Kilkis and more specifically on the lot number 0T20 with a total surface area of 8 hectares.

The selected method for cutting the tyres is mechanical decomposition in ambient temperature. The recycling unit is properly equipped for the following operations:

• Collection of used tyres from specific areas at the prefectures of Eastern Macedonia, Thrace and Thessalia (approximately 18.500 tonnes) with ten specific trucks, of 20-tonne capacity each one, equipped with loading crane and multi-arm calliper
• Storage of tyres in specific outdoor areas
• Tyre cutter, rubber granulation, mesh magnetic separator, fibber separator and air filters
• Packages of recycling products

The total installed power capacity of the unit is approximately 670KW. The air requirement for the filter units is 2,5m3/h at 6bars.

The recycling facility is equipped with all the necessary means (bags, pallets, packaging tapes etc.) for the safe packaging for both storage and transportation of the granulated rubber and the solid waste of the treatment procedure. Further, a building is included for the installation of the treatment unit and other required services. The external dimensions of the building are 70m x 32m.

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the environmental public authority and contributed to the operation of the tyre recycling unit in the industrial area of Kilkis.
