DESIGN OF DEPOSITION CHAMBERS

Client: Egnatia Road SA
Year: 2003
Budget: 830.000€ (2002 prices)

ISSUE

The purpose of the project was the identification and evaluation of deposition chambers for placement of the unsuitable surplus of excavated material from the road section 11.2 and 11.3 (Asprovalta – Strimonas) of the Egnatia Road in order for the Environmental Terms of the project to be approved.

SOLUTION Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

The presumable deposits were situated in sections 2 (CSS) and 3A – 3I (cross streets).

The total deposits mass came up to 1.830.000m3. Summarily, the measures proposed for the landscape restoration after the materials deposition in order were: slopes shaping, corrugation on flat surfaces, restoration of the revealed topsoil, opening excavation pits on slopes levels, forestation works in order to reintroduce species of local flora and fencing the deposition chambers in order to protect the new plantings from pasture.

It is noted that the restoration of deposition locations was based on the guidelines set by the Landscape Restoration Design Guide (LRDG) of Egnatia Odos SA.

The proposed works for each position were:
  • Position 2: After the settlement and deforestation of the area and the deposition of soil cover, gradually began the deposition of surplus materials from the construction of the road. Initially, the deposition started with heaps of small height, which then plied with direction from west to east. The technical works were:
  1. construction of retaining wall
  2. construction of two cross technical downstream of the base
  3. construction of a relative number of tubular drains for the removal of water
At the same time, the structures contained within the thickness of the spreading zone were built, and concern the operation of the Car Service Station and also are part of the main design.
  • Position 3: After the deforestation and the initial deposition laying took place in stages. During the deposition of layers there was a concentration and soaking of the soil material before applying the next layer. Furthermore, the construction of a drainage ditch for water management and containment of sediment, was anticipated.
Finally, for the prevention of corrosion, species of plants known in the broader region were planted (eg holm oaks)

In the current project, all the exact deposit locations were identified. In addition, there was an analysis of the current situation where the natural and human environment situation was investigated. At the same time, information about the feasibility of the works has been given, along with a detailed technical description of them.

Finally, the extent and size of the caused denaturation of the environment was described from the construction and operation of works along with the encounter of environmental impacts, while relevant alternatives have been considered.

BENEFIT
The project was submitted to the proper department within the framework of environmental project policy, and contributed to the completion of Egnatia Odos’s construction.
