ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY FOR THE WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) OF PALIO, KAVALA PREFECTURE

Client: Municipal Water and Wastewater Utility of Kavala
Year: 2003

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the investigation of the compliance with the relevant hygiene provisions for bathing waters of the coastline Palio near the WWTP diffuser pipe, without the application of additional disinfection (e.g. chlorination) of treated wastewater.

SOLUTION
The WWTP occupies an area of 12 hectares at the cape of “Kakoplaka”. The community of Palios was connected to the WWTP since 1998.
View of Palio coast in KavalaΠ.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ
The study described the operation of the WWTP, the treatment units (influent works, aeration tanks etc.) and the quality of the effluent from each treatment unit.

Then, a detailed description was presented for the transport and diffusion of the wastewater in the marine area using a simulation model for transport, diffusion and dilution of coliforms from the diffuser pipe, presenting eleven (11) applied diffusion scenarios.

In conclusion, it was found that the contribution of the effluent from the WWTP of Palios to the measured number of coliforms in the adjacent coastal areas is absolutely zero and has no impact in the broader marine area or the protected area of Natura 2000 (GR 1150009). As a consequence, the partial disinfection with the use of hydrogen peroxide in the treated effluent from the WWTP appears quite satisfactory and there is no need for additional disinfection.

BENEFIT
The completion of this study documented the compliance of the current disinfection of the effluent from the WWTP with the hygiene provisions for bathing waters. Thus, the Municipal Water and Wastewater Utility of Kavala is not obliged to apply additional disinfection.
