SUPPLEMENTARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR EGNATIA HIGHWAY, SECTION 5.3: VEROIA-LEFKOPETRA

Client: Consortium for the construction of Egnatia Highway, Section of Veroia-Lefkopetra
Year: 2002

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the renewal and modification of the environmental terms of the project for the construction of the highway Kouroura-Veroia-Lefkopetra of the Egnatia Road from Station18+817 to Station 18+832.

SOLUTION

The original design at the initial location proposed the construction of two viaducts (one for each branch of the highway) for crossing the torrent in the area. The location of the viaducts was close to tunnel Σ3 and according to the design they had three openings.Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

However, in the modified study, the viaducts Γ3 were replaced by a reinforced backfill and a rectangular culvert without plan and profile modification of the approved works.
The construction of the proposed backfill included three terraces with a width of 3m, height of 10m and slope gradient 2:3. The total volume of the backfill was 350.000m3.

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. Moreover, alternative construction works are examined for this project.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for the renewal and modification of the environmental terms and contributed to the completion of the Egnatia Highway construction works.
