SUPPLEMENTARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR EGNATIA HIGHWAY, SECTION LEFKOPETRA-KOULOURA-VEROIA 5.2/5.3

Client: Consortium for the construction of Egnatia Highway, section of Veroia-Lefkopetra
Year: 2001

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the renewal and modification of the environmental terms of the project for the construction of the highway Kouloura-Lefkopetra-Veroia of Egnatia Highway from Station 20+266,05 to Station 20+406,60 and more specifically, the modification of the existing technical works (replacement of a viaduct with rectangular culvert)

SOLUTION Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

The original design at the initial location proposed the construction of two viaducts (one for each branch of the highway) for crossing the torrent Vlaxioti.

However, due to geotechnical problems the proposed viaducts were replaced by a backfill and a rectangular culvert without plan and profile modification of the approved works.

The proposed backfill included four terraces with a width of 4m, height of 10m and slope gradient 2:3. The total volume of the backfill was 200.000m3.

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for renewal and modification of the environmental terms and contributed to the completion of the Egnatia Highway construction works.
