Client: Egnatia Highway Enterprise SA
Year: 2001

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment for the approval of environmental terms of the project for the construction and improvement of section Mesti-Makri (Section 15.4) of Egnatia Highway.

SOLUTION

The Section Mesti-Makri of Egnatia Highway has a total length of 14km. The construction of this section will contribute to the completion of Egnatia Highway construction works.Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

The route of the highway follows the existing route of the Old National Highway which connects Mesti interchange with Makri interchange. The highway axis starts from Mesti interchange and finishes to Makri interchange from where it connects to the highway of Makri-Bridge of Kipoi, the next section of Egnatia Highway.

The proposed works include all the technical works required for the operation and environmental integration of the highway. The main technical works include the construction of underground pedestrian crossings at Station 4+508,91 and construction of a large number of culverts (rectangular, vaulted, tubular and encased culverts).

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for renewal and modification of environmental terms and contributed essentially to the completion of the Egnatia Highway construction works.
