ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment study for the approval of the environmental terms for the development works for the connection of the start point of the bicycle roadway to the touristic settlement of Arogi and the street of Fanari Arogi-Mesi, and the end point of the bicycle roadway to the touristic community of Mesi.

The proposed works are included in the project for the protection and enhancement of the Ismarida Lakes complex, which are part of the Program for the delimitation of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace in regard to the conservation, protection and management of the wetlands in this area.

The purpose of the intervention works is the enhancement of the natural environment of the wetlands in the study area and the access of the visitors-tourists to the ecosystems of Ismarida lagoons, for observation and exploration.

The proposed works include:
• Development of the existing roadway section for the connection of the bicycle roadway to the Arogi community and the Arogi-Mesi-Fanari street. The roadway section starts from the curve of Arogi-Mesi-Fanari street, located 175m west of the village. The entire section of the road is included in the approved street plan of the area. The roadway is 16m wide.
• Development of the roadway section for the connection of the bicycle roadway to Mesi touristic community. The proposed work starts from the end of the bicycle roadway, after the wooden bridge of the channel of Lake Karatza and ends straight to the eastern boundary of the community of Mesi. The roadway section is the perimetric roadway of the existing street plan, is located in the south part of the community and has a total length of 500m and a width of 12m.
• Construction of fencing and information signs.

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for environmental licensing and contributed to the protection and enhancement of Ismarida Lagoons.
