ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment for the construction of the enhancement works of the coastline of Avdira, Prefecture of Xanthi which included the formation of recreation areas with mild interventions.
SOLUTION

During the summer the coastline of Avdira is overcrowded by swimmers and tourists. The enhancement of the coastline is necessary for the development of the appropriate infrastructure services.
The coastline has a length of 1200m and a width of 20m.
The proposed interventions include:
• Cafeteria
• Bathtubs-toilets and locker rooms
• Shade shelters
• Lifeguard outpost
• Wooden walkways
• Landscaping works
• Sports areas
In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.
Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. Moreover, alternative construction works are examined for this project.
BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the environmental public service for environmental licensing of the proposed works and contributed essentially to the enhancement of the coastline of Avdira at Prefecture of Xanthi.
