Client: Prefecture of Thessaloniki
Year: 1998

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment for the approval of the environmental terms for the construction of a new bridge and the required access works for crossing the river of Axios, close to the communities of Xalastra and N.Malgaron, downstream of the existing bridge, which due to the age and the narrow width of the roadway, cannot satisfy the transportation demands in the area.

SOLUTION
                                                                                                View of the bridge
Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣThe total length of the bridge is 300m (10 openings x 30m). The total length of each of the two access roads to the bridge is 200m.

According to the new design, the bridge consists of reinforced concrete (plated beams type) with prefabricated beams and deck slab, which consists of prefabricated plates placed on the beams and additional cast-in-place layer which completes the deck slab and the body of the bridge.

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. At the same time alternatives were examined.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for the approval of the environmental terms and contributed in resolving the transportation demands in the broader area.
