SUPPLEMENTARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY FOR EGNATIA HIGHWAY SECTION, GREVENA-KOZANI (FROM STATION 12+520 TO STATION 12+880)

Client: AEGEK SA
Year: 1999

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the renewal-modification of environmental terms for the construction of the section Grevena-Kozani (from station 12+520 to station 12+880) of Egnatia Highway and more specifically, the replacement of the method of cut and cover with the method of open trench excavation and restoration of the surrounding area.

SOLUTION

According to the original design on the target location proposed the construction of an underground using the method of cut and cover. However, due to the environmental impacts, the proposed method was replaced with the method of open trench excavation and the restoration of the surrounding area without plan and profile modifications of the approved works.

On both sides of the highway, the open trench has a slope gradient of 2:3 and a total height of 30m. Terraces, 4 meter wide, are placed every 10m of trench height. Beyond the 30m trench height, mild slope gradients of 1:3 are formed, which covered with vegetation; the upper part of the trench is rounded with a radius of 20m. The total excavation volume is 990.000m3.Π.ΠΕΡΙΒ/ΝΤΟΣ

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for the renewal-modification of the environmental terms and contributed to the completion of the Egnatia Highway construction works.
