ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY OF MILD INTERVENTION WORKS IN THE REGION OF DELTA NESTOS (EASTERN AND WESTERN REGION OF THE DELTA NESTOS) IN PREFECTURE OF XANTHI

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment for the approval of the environmental terms for the construction of mild architectural intervention works at the Delta of Nestos River (area of forest Kotza Orman).

The intervention works are included in the Protection and Management Programme of the wetlands Delta Nestos, Lake Vistonida, Lake Ismarida and their surrounding territories.

The whole area has been designated as “National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace”.
The purpose of the intervention works is the management, protection and enhancement of the wetland in order to bring closer the visitors and local people to the natural environment.

The proposed works include:
• Bicycle roadway
• Entry outpost-WC
• Wooden shading roofs
• Wooden tables and chairs
• Wooden benches
• Interventions to the beach of Erasmios which include:
- Wooden fence
- Lifeguard outpost
- Playground
- Shading roofs
- Tables and chairs
• Interventions to the beach of Keramoti which include:
- Bicycle roadway
- View point
- Shading roofs
- Tables and chairs
• Interventions to the beach of Chrysoupoli  which include:
- Cafeteria
- Shading roofs
- Tables and chairs
- Wooden fences
• Signs

The construction of the proposed intervention works included materials which are environmentally friendly and cause the least impact to the environment.
 
In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. Moreover, alternative construction works are examined for this project.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for the approval of the environmental terms of the works and it contributed to the protection, management and enhancement of the Delta of River Nestos.
