ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY OF MILD INTERVENTION WORKS ON THE LAKESIDE AREA OF LAKE VISTONIDA IN PREFECTURE OF XANTHI

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment study for the approval of the environmental terms for the construction of mild architectural works at the lake side area of Lake Vistonida and more specifically at the region of Kessani-Porto Lagos.

The intervention works are included in the Protection and Management Programme of the wetlands Delta Nestos, Lake Vistonida, Lake Ismarida and their surrounding territories.

The whole area has been designated as “National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace”.

The purpose of the intervention works is the management, protection and enhancement of the wetland in order to bring closer the visitors and local people to the natural environment.

The proposed works include:

• Bicycle roadway
• Pathways
• Entry outpost-pavilion-WC
• Observatory area
• Wooden shading roofs
• Renovation of the chapel Saint Paraskevi
• Maintenance of the existing wooden observatory in the heron colony of (area of Porto Lagos)
• Signs

The construction of the proposed intervention works included materials which are environmentally friendly and cause the least impact to the environment.

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. Moreover, alternative construction works are examined for this project.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the environmental public authority for environmental licensing for the construction of the works and contributed to the protection, management and enhancement of the lakeside area of Lake Vistonida.
