Project Summary

Renewable Energy Sources
SITE INVESTIGATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS FOR MUNICIPALITY OF VEROIA

Client: Water and Wastewater Utility of Veroia
Year: 2007

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the site investigation in the broader region of Municipality of Veroia to locate candidate sites for the development of small hydroelectric power plants (SHEPs) for the production of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES).

SOLUTION
At the initial phase of the project, it was presented the operation of a typical SHEP. Next, the potential sites were evaluated based on the energy efficiency for each candidate site.

Furthermore, the potential environmental impacts of SHEPs were presented. Finally, the institutional and legal framework for the RES was described as well as the required documents for the issuance of the production, installation and operation permits.

For the implementation of the project, it was suggested the use of the design-built contracting method in order to determine accurately, in a next phase, all the parameters defined in the present phase.

BENEFIT
The site investigation for the development of SHEPs contributed to the sustainable production of electricity from renewable energy sources.
